Pakistan has produced 1.4 million mobile phones including 60 lakh smartphones

Islamabad: From January to June, Pakistan manufactured 1.4 million mobile phones, including 6 million smart phones, while importing 1.14 million mobile phones.

According to Wealth Pak report, Pakistan manufactured 14 million mobile phones from January to June 2022 while 1.14 million mobile phones were imported during the same period.

According to the data released by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, Pakistan assembled 1.67 million mobiles in June 2022, which is 37% less than the 2.69 million mobiles produced in May 2022.

During the first six months of this year, Pakistan assembled 6.02 million smartphones, while from January to June 2022, 8.06 million 2G mobiles were manufactured.

Speaking to Wealth Pak, Chairman of Mobile Phones Importers and Manufacturers Association Muzaffar Hayat Paracha said that the government of Pakistan has recently amended its import policy to reduce the pressure on foreign exchange reserves.

He said that these amendments have a detrimental effect on the mobile device manufacturing industry which is still in its infancy. We are key stakeholders in Pakistan’s mobile phone industry system. We fully recognize the current fiscal problems facing the country and fully support the government’s efforts to increase foreign exchange reserves.

He said that the State Bank of Pakistan has instructed the authorized dealers to take prior permission from the Department of Foreign Exchange Operations. State Bank lists mobile companies in its circulars before initiating transactions for import of goods.

He said that we request the government to take steps to remove these unnecessary conditions on the import of semi-knocked-down mobile devices to protect the mobile manufacturing industry and save the employment of thousands of workers involved. Make efforts.

He urged the government to ensure the promulgation of a statutory regulatory order for local taxes and levies schemes. DLTL was approved by the Economic Coordination Committee of the Cabinet on 20 March 2022 and ratified by the Cabinet on 02 April 2022.

According to the report, a reduction of 5% has been agreed under the said scheme. An SRO may be issued in this regard. Local taxes are around 5 percent which includes sales tax, provincial tax and duty on batteries. He said that the country’s mobile phone importers and manufacturers have sent a letter to the finance minister to resolve the problems of the mobile industry.

He said that Mobile Phones Importers and Manufacturers Association and its members have played an important role in the development of Pakistan’s mobile phone and related products sector, including device identification, registration, blocking system development and Pakistan’s Includes formulation of the first mobile device manufacturing policy.
